Communication - Nov 1, 2017

Listen: L iberator 023: Understanding Leadership and Communication from The Liberator Podcast

Communication is a vital component to any relationship we have in our lives both personally and professional. On today's conference call we will discuss a code system explained in The Liberator Podcast to help promote healthier communication for you and within your teams.

Integrated Practice: Draw 1 stick figure (you) on the left side of the page and draw another stick figure on the right side of the page. Do this for 4-5 different relationships in your life that you communicate with most frequently. Link your stick figure to the other stick figure using one of the three types of lines described below to represent the flow of communication in that relationship.

  • Straight line: good, open communication
  • Curvy or choppy line: the more difficult the communication the more pronounced the waves should be
  • Dotted or dashed line: Disconnected communication

Reflection: In addition to thinking about how you perceive the communication, put yourself in the role of the other and explore what their perception of the communication may be. For example, do they experience you as a good listener or someone who cuts them off or doesn't fully seek to understand their perspective?

SBNRR - Oct 18, 2017

Listen: Simply Stopping

When your stress is building into an exasperating moment, emotions can easily get the best of you. And that can be detrimental if you're in a professional environment. The next time you're about to explode with stress, try this instead:

Integrated Practice: Try a "Minute to Arrive" practice. When you start a new activity today, maybe a meeting or a meal, practicing stopping and taking a moment of silence to give yourself time to become more present in this next activity.

Reflection Question: What impact did stopping and having a moment of silence have on your next activity? After completing the integrated practice above, write down your thoughts on the experience. You can also contact a friend and share your experience while practicing mindful listening.

Additional Practice: SBNRR - Stop. Breathe. Notice. Reflect. Respond

VALUES - Oct 4, 2017

Podcast: Values from the Minimalists Podcast

Values Worksheet

Values are the elements of life that are important to you, things that we strive to implement in our daily lives. Values are not necessarily something you always live in accordance with, but rather they represent your ideal self. Knowing your values and working to live in alignment with them are an important key to our happiness, satisfaction, and ability to lead others well. Take a moment and complete this journal exercise to help you clarify your values.

  • Choose 3 people you admire
  • For each person, write what traits you admire, and what situations they displayed these traits
  • Review what you wrote
  • Create a list of at least 5 core values that you hold

Later today, connect with someone else who has completed this journal exercise and share with them your top values and how these show up in your life.
