Protecting Your Life’s Journey with Everplans

Jan. 17, 2020

As we go through daily life, many of us don’t think about planning for retirement , creating a will, or what would happen in the event of a sudden tragedy. While it’s never fun to plan for these things, it is important to have a plan in place if you were no longer around.

Thankfully, planning for your future is now easier than ever with digital tools like Everplans which walks you through the planning process and then stores your information in an encrypted digital vault. We’re taking a look at how Everplans can help you plan for the future, no matter what stage of life you’re in.

How Everplans works

The Everplans digital vault contains six categories of information, broken down into 29 subsections.

Setup

When you log in to your Everplan for the first time, you'll be guided through a series of steps to upload and store the items your loved ones will need to finalize your estate when the time comes. You can always go in and edit or add to your Everplan, as the dashboard makes it easy to customize your plan anytime.

Choose your Deputy

When you finish setting up your Everplan you can assign a Deputy to your account. This person will have access to view the parts of your Everplan that you give them permission to view. You can also lock parts of your Everplan that will remain private and inaccessible to your Deputy until a designated time, or when you pass away.

Starting a career + Investing in the future

Whether you’re just starting a new career, or you are investing in your future with a 401(k) or savings account, your Everplan is a good place to store documents related to your job like health, vision and dental insurance information, life insurance policies or health savings (HSA) accounts.

If you’re a small business owner, you might want to add your employment ID number, your website information, digital accounts or locations of important documents like incorporation paperwork.

Mortgages + Adding dependents

Once you start paying bills or incur debts like a mortgage or student loan, it’s also important to have this information on file.

If you’re paying a mortgage, be sure to include information about your mortgage, the location of the deed, homeowner’s insurance, and property tax information. If you’re renting, drop in your landlord’s information or a renter’s insurance policy if you have one. For either option, you’ll also want to add information about utility services, so your Deputy has easy access to finalize these accounts. If you have any home security systems in place, your Everplan is a good place to securely store passwords or safe words for your alarm.

If you have dependents, you can also add their important information in your Everplan, including their doctor’s contact information, any life insurance policies you have for them, and even the person you’d choose as their guardian.

You can also add information about your pet’s veterinarian or health and diet needs. Be sure to mention other helpful information, like their microchip ID or grooming tips!

Late career + Planning for retirement

Later in life, you might have invested in additional savings accounts such as annuities or IUL’s during your working years. When you get close to entering into retirement, you’ll want to add these accounts to your Everplan.

You might also add your revised will or estate plan (read more about creating a will on our blog). Having all of these items in your Everplan ensures that your loved ones only have to go to one place to find all of this information, making it easy to ensure that everything is taken care of in a way that you designate.

Entering retirement

Once you finally reach your golden years and are enjoying the retirement of your dreams, take one more look at your Everplan to make sure all of your financial, health information, wills and beneficiary designations are up to date.

Check to make sure your Deputy is still aware that they are charge of your plan, and you’re good to go! You’ll be able to rest easy knowing that your plans are organized and secured for the future.
